Do QR codes expire?
A QR code image does not have a clock inside it. There is no date encoded into the pattern that automatically makes the code stop scanning.
What people often call “QR code expiration” is usually one of two things:
- the destination URL stopped working, or
- a dynamic QR provider disabled the redirect behind the code.

Static and dynamic QR codes fail differently
A static QR code stores its destination directly. If the URL remains active, the QR can continue pointing to it indefinitely. But if that URL changes, the printed code cannot usually be updated.
A dynamic QR code uses a managed redirect. The destination can be changed later, but the QR depends on the provider continuing to operate that redirect.

What should you check before choosing a QR service?
If you need a QR code for signs, packaging, business cards or other long-lived materials, check the provider’s terms for:
- expiration rules
- scan limits
- destination editing

Do not assume “dynamic” automatically means permanent.

Expiration and scan limits are not the same thing. A QR code may remain active but still be subject to a scan cap depending on the provider.
