What is a static QR code?

A static QR code stores the destination directly inside the QR pattern.

When someone scans it, the phone reads that destination from the QR itself.

There is no managed redirect required between the scan and the destination.

The main advantage: simplicity

Static QR codes can be useful when:

  • the destination will never change
  • you do not need scan analytics
  • you want a direct encoded URL
  • you control the destination long term

For example, a static QR can be appropriate for a permanent webpage on a domain you control.

The main limitation: the destination cannot normally be changed

Once a static QR code is printed, changing the destination means creating a different QR pattern.

This becomes a problem if the QR is already printed on:

  • signs
  • brochures
  • business cards
  • packaging
  • flyers
  • menus

The article I Printed a Static QR Code, but the Link Changed — What Can I Do? explains the limited workarounds.

Static vs. dynamic QR codes

A dynamic QR code uses a managed redirect instead of permanently encoding the final destination.

That can allow destination changes and scan tracking after printing.

Read Static vs. Dynamic QR Codes: What's the Difference? for the full comparison.

Static QR codes do not automatically expire

A static QR code has no built-in expiration date.

However, the destination can still stop working if the webpage or file is removed.

See QR Code Generator Without Expiration for a deeper explanation of expiration.

When should you choose static?

Static works best when you are confident the destination is permanent.

If the printed material is expensive, long-lived or difficult to replace, consider whether the flexibility of dynamic is worth more than the simplicity of static.

Test before printing

Once a static QR is printed, the code itself cannot be corrected without reprinting.
