Use a dynamic QR code
A dynamic QR code is the usual starting point for scan tracking because scans pass through a managed redirect.
That redirect can record the scan before sending the visitor to the destination.
Decide what you want to measure
Useful QR questions include:
- How many scans did this code receive?
- Which placement performed best?
- When are people scanning?
- Are scans increasing over time?
- Which campaign generated website conversions?
The QR Code Tracking page explains the difference between scan analytics and website analytics.
Use separate QR codes for separate placements
If you place one QR code on:
- a flyer
- a window sign
- a business card
- a counter sign
you may know the total scans, but not which placement drove them.
Separate codes make comparisons much clearer.
Add UTM parameters
UTM parameters help identify QR campaign traffic inside GA4 or another analytics platform.
For example, a flyer destination might include:
utm_source=qr
utm_medium=print
utm_campaign=fall_offer
Compare QR data with website analytics
QR analytics show the scan.
Website analytics show what happens afterward.
Together, they can answer:
- Did scans lead to page views?
- Did visitors complete a form?
- Did one placement convert better?
- Did a campaign continue generating traffic after the event?
Keep naming consistent
Use clear internal names for your QR codes.
Examples:
- Phoenix Front Window
- Spring Flyer
- Table Tent Menu
- Trade Show Booth
- Business Card - Sales Team
Consistent naming becomes much more valuable as the number of QR codes grows.
Test tracking before launch
Scan the QR yourself and confirm that:
- the scan registers
- the destination loads
- the UTM values appear correctly
- the campaign name is clear

Do not confuse scans with people
One person can scan the same QR multiple times.
Treat scan count as activity, not necessarily unique individuals.
